Needham sustainability manager reports fleet planning, grant award for electric pickup and public bioretention meeting

Gabby, Needham's sustainability manager, updated the Climate Action Committee on municipal electrification and related projects at the Feb. 3 meeting.

Staff summarized a municipal fleet assessment that estimated roughly two level-2 charging ports per year plus about one level-3 charger every two years would be needed to meet the town's road-map goal of fully electrifying the fleet by 2050, assuming an even deployment pace. Gabby said the town has already started planning for an electric bus and that charger compatibility with bus models remains a key procurement consideration.

Gabby reported the town was awarded a grant to support purchase of a Ford F-150 Lightning municipal pickup (the town's first electric pickup). She said the schools department and municipal fleet managers have been in discussions about compatible chargers and vendors; Gabby described a visit to the Boston Public Schools depot as providing useful lessons on infrastructure obstacles and vendor coordination.

Staff announced a public virtual meeting on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. to present draft concepts for the Basio Parking Lot bioretention basin (grant-funded design work). Staff said additional public-input opportunities will continue through June.

Other updates: committee members praised the school nutrition services for replacing foam trays with metal trays at the new public school, which the committee described as a significant waste-reduction step.

Gabby said Needham met the FY25 Green Communities project completion deadline and plans to apply in the next Green Communities round in April.
