Mayor: Bremerton named regional fan zone for FIFA 2026; Quincy Square groundbreaking set for Jan. 20

Mayor Wheeler told the City Council on Jan. 15 that Downtown Bremerton has been selected as a regional 'fan zone' site for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and that the designation places the city in a regional and state network expected to bring economic and visitor opportunities.
Wheeler said the city and regional partners, including Port Orchard and Kitsap County, are developing a playbook for jurisdictions to coordinate fan-zone activities and logistics; he said Quincy Square will be a focal activation area and that Quincy Square's formal groundbreaking is scheduled for Jan. 20 at 2:30 p.m. The mayor told council the city will need agreements and legal review for some elements of the fan-zone programming.
Wheeler also reported the city's winter preparedness measures, including pretreated streets with brine, stockpiled sand and salt, and trained equipment and personnel ready for inclement weather. He recognized four Bremerton Fire Department members deployed to wildfire response in California and thanked them for their service.
On Quincy Square, Wheeler said construction is expected to proceed in phases with a target to complete core components by midyear so programming and performances can begin. He said the city aims to activate Quincy Square to support FIFA viewing and related events for both residents and visitors.
The mayor said more information on the FIFA playbook will be available in early to mid-February and that staff will return to council when agreements require council review or approval.
