Jacksonville City Council approved legislation to correct prior-year appropriation totals in the capital improvements program and to advance a set of drainage projects, including work at Burnett Park and Sheridan Street.
Public Works Deputy Director Nina Sickler told council that the amendment revises CIP line items to correct prior-year appropriation totals so the department can proceed. She and Sheldon Gibbs of Public Works said many of the projects are ready to enter design or construction and that contracts are in place so work can begin once the expenditures are authorized.
Councilmember Boiling (who spoke in support) asked about timelines for Burnett Park, a project that has been delayed because the magnitude of the work proved greater than originally estimated. Sheldon Gibbs said several projects, including Burnett Park, are in various design stages and that work will begin when funding is available and contractors selected.
On Sheridan Street, Gibbs said the package for design and construction is about $875,000 and will address three drainage issues with inlet and pipe work; some temporary road closures are likely while crews work on underground piping. He said the exact project limits would appear in design plans and staff would provide those to the councilmember for constituent notification.
The council adopted the CIP amendment; the amendment carried. The council then voted on the bill as amended; the clerk recorded a 7–0 vote in favor. By that action the council approved 20 24 9 40 5 (and related CIP corrections) as amended.
Public Works staff said the approvals allow the department to move from design to contractor selection and construction depending on each project's phase; councilmembers requested that staff provide schedule and limit-of-work information to affected districts before major closures.
