The SeaTac City Council voted Jan. 13 to award a construction contract to FTS Excavation for the South 150th Street and 30th Avenue South crossing project to add ADA ramps, a high-visibility painted crosswalk and pedestrian-actuated LED rapid rectangular flashing beacons.
Brenton Cook, engineering manager in Public Works, said the work will improve pedestrian access to the Tukwila light-rail station and nearby RapidRide/F-line bus stops and the post office. The project was advertised as a Small Works roster contract; FTS Excavation was the low responsible bidder at $144,772, about 3% below the city's engineer estimate. Cook said design and construction costs are expected to be largely offset by a Sound Transit STRIDE system access grant once the city completes the work and submits invoices.
During committee review staff performed due diligence, including a background check on the contractor; Cook reported no red flags. Councilmembers asked about the crosswalk's proximity to a freeway off-ramp and whether the location might cause queuing; Public Works staff said the site was chosen to match bus-stop locations and that future intersection upgrades are planned, and that they will provide any further design study documentation on request.
The council approved the motion authorizing the incoming city manager to execute the construction contract and related project expenditures; the vote was recorded 7-0.
