Chester County proclaims Jan. 20, 2025, Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Coatesville NAACP outlines weekend of service

The proclamation — read aloud during the meeting by Commissioner Moskowitz and signed by the board — describes Dr. King as having “devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all” and notes that the federal holiday is designated as a national day of volunteer service. Commissioner Moskowitz stated, “Signed by all the Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Maxwell, Commissioner Rao, and myself.”
Chidel Quinones, president-elect of the Coatesville branch of the NAACP, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the branch and described the organization’s planned events. “It is with great honor,” Quinones said, to accept the 2025 Martin Luther King Day proclamation. He outlined a weekend of activities beginning Friday, Jan. 17, and culminating Monday, Jan. 20, that will include a panel discussion, a concert on Jan. 19, and a reenactment of the Prettis Bridge march that the branch first held last year. Lila Singleton, the branch’s incoming secretary, joined Quinones at the meeting.
Quinones emphasized the branch’s focus on service and community partnership, saying the events “are not just a day of being off work, but it is a day of getting out and servicing our community.” He also invited the commissioners to attend the NAACP’s installation event at Coatesville City Hall on Friday, Jan. 10, at 6 p.m.
The proclamation text on the record also notes that, since 1994, Congress has designated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday as a national day of volunteer service and encourages Chester County nonprofits, faith-based organizations, schools, public agencies and businesses to organize service activities around the holiday.
The proclamation and the NAACP’s remarks occurred near the start of the meeting; no formal vote count was recorded in the transcript beyond the statement that the document was signed by the commissioners.
