School Committee approves athletic fee increases to help close FY26 budget gap

The Hingham School Committee voted unanimously to approve proposed increases to athletic fees for fiscal year 2026.
Administrators presented benchmarking showing Hingham’s single-sport fee was already on the high end among area districts but that family-cap treatment and multi-sport differentials varied across neighboring towns. The committee approved raising the base individual sport fee from $4.25 to $4.50 and increasing the first-sport hockey fee to $7.50. Administrators proposed a $200 increment for two-sport athletes (non-hockey) and no charge for a third non-hockey sport. The committee approved family caps of $1,400 per family for standard sports and $1,700 for families that include hockey players.
District staff used FY24 participation counts to model projected revenue, applied adjustments for income and the family cap, and reported an adjusted revenue estimate of $411,000 and a net incremental contribution of about $56,000 over the previously budgeted figure for FY26.
Administrators and committee members said athletics fees do not cover the full athletics budget but reduce the amount of reductions that would otherwise be required in other areas of the budget. The committee approved the motion by roll call vote; votes were recorded as unanimous.
The policy subcommittee and business office will finalize fee schedules and family-cap implementations, and staff said they will communicate changes to families before the public hearing and before the start of seasons.
