American Legion urges city to speed memorial emblem upgrade and maintenance

Dave Hamlin, post commander of the Lake Stevens American Legion Memorial Post 181, told the City Council on Jan. 28 that the post has been handling flag replacement and half‑staff protocols for the city’s war memorial and asked when plans to install larger service emblems would be implemented.
“We replace the flags every six months, and we also handle the half‑staff requirements that come down from Washington, D.C., and from the state government,” Hamlin said.
Hamlin said he has heard comments that the emblems on the memorial will be replaced with larger versions and that larger emblems “would greatly enhance the visibility of the memorial.” He also asked the council to consider more regular cleaning and moss removal, telling the council that moss and accumulated dirt “detracts from the appearance of the memorial.”
Parks staff confirmed they have been in contact with the American Legion and will follow up on what maintenance is needed. The post offered continued volunteer support for maintaining flags and ceremonies.
No formal council action was taken during the meeting; staff said they would respond to the American Legion following the meeting.
