City manager Scott Collins briefed the council on a letter from the Shelbyville-Bedford partnership requesting the city rejoin the organization with an annual contribution of $100,000.
Collins said the partnership asked the city to consider allocating a portion of hotel-motel tax revenues in addition to the annual contribution and to appoint two city representatives to the partnership board. Collins and council members discussed payment timing and whether the amount could be paid quarterly; Collins said the partnership described quarterly $25,000 payments as a possible schedule.
Council members asked for clarity about the partnership's current structure and representation, and whether the mayor plus a council member or other officials would be the appropriate city representatives. Collins said staff would bring the partnership letter to the council for a vote at the regular meeting, and that more negotiation of terms would be possible before a final decision.
Separately, staff presented a tourism sponsorship request from the Community Clinic of Shelbyville and Bedford County seeking a $5,000 sponsorship for a gala (described by staff as a sponsorship, not a donation). The request would designate the city a platinum sponsor, with a table for eight and recognition during the gala. Staff said the clinic estimates some out-of-town attendees and hotel room bookings related to the event.
Ending: Council members asked staff to provide more details between the study session and the next regular meeting; the partnership invitation and the sponsorship request were to be considered at the upcoming council vote and no final decision was recorded at the study session.
