Public commenter urges Redmond to accelerate municipal building decarbonization

Morton said the report ties building energy performance metrics to equipment condition and carbon-impact rankings so staff can prioritize upgrades that align with facility maintenance. He called the report “well researched and actionable” and said its ranking system enables bundling upgrades to achieve cost efficiencies.
Morton highlighted several challenges noted in the report: the city’s continued reliance on natural gas for heating, aging HVAC systems in multiple facilities, and electrical-capacity constraints in older buildings. He said participation in Puget Sound Energy’s Green Direct program helps reduce Redmond’s municipal electricity emissions but stressed that eliminating natural gas use remains essential to meeting the report’s goal — which he described in his remarks as reaching carbon neutrality from city operations by “02/1930.”
In his remarks Morton also recommended the city include stronger financial modeling to estimate costs and return on investment for proposed upgrades and expand community engagement to publicize benefits and build support. No council action on the report was recorded during the Feb. 4 meeting; Morton delivered his comments during the publicly noticed “items from the audience” segment.
