The Boys & Girls Club of Snohomish County donated 7.34 acres to the City of Everett on the consent agenda Tuesday, a parcel the club said will become a nature trail and park honoring longtime leader Rosemary Lane.
Bill Sikalas, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Snohomish County, told the council the parcel was originally owned by Group Health, later purchased by Twelfth Street Partners, and that the developer donated the 7.34 acres to the club. "We voted on that, just before the end of the year, our board of directors did to donate the 7.34 acres, in Rosemary Lane's name to the city of Everett," Sikalas said during public comment.
The donation drew public comments from family members and partners. Tom Lane, Rosemary Lane's son, described his mother's long involvement with the club and said the family was honored by the dedication. Mary Swenson, executive director of the Everett Housing Authority, said the authority will partner on the parcel and on the nearby Park District redevelopment, and updated the council on plans for the Park District property.
Swenson said demolition bids for the larger Park District site are out and that staff expect to award a contract in spring, begin demolition in summer and that demolition will likely take about six months. She added the Everett Housing Authority has an agreement with the city to allow police and fire training on the site while demolition and planning proceed.
Council members from across the dais praised the donation and the partnerships with the housing authority and neighborhood groups. Council President Schwab thanked the Boys & Girls Club, the Lane family and the Everett Housing Authority: "We really appreciate it and we're excited to provide this new asset to the community," Schwab said.
The donation was approved as part of the council's consent agenda. The parcel is intended for passive recreation and a nature trail; specific design and construction timelines will be set as the Park District redevelopment proceeds and in coordination with the Everett Housing Authority and neighborhood stakeholders.
Votes at a glance The council approved the consent agenda, which included the Boys & Girls Club donation, on a roll-call vote recorded as: Vice President Zirlingo — yes; Council Member Mary Fossey — yes; Council Member Bader — yes; Council Member Rhine — yes; Council Member Vogley — yes; Council Member Tuohy — yes; President Schwab — yes.
Looking ahead Council and city staff said they will work with the Everett Housing Authority, neighborhood groups and the Boys & Girls Club to develop a community process for trail and park design and to coordinate schedules with the Park District demolition and redevelopment.
