EDC-sponsored Golden Gloves event drew local attention; board retroactively approved elementary program sponsorship

Hugo Wazni, San Juan Parks and Recreation director, told the Economic Development Corporation the recent 89th RGV Golden Gloves regional boxing championships was held at the Paine Arena and that the event produced strong attendance and sponsor recognition for the EDC.
"My name is Hugo Wazni. I am the city and San Juan Parks and Recreation, director," Wazni said during his remarks. He said the EDC was advertised on-site, on social media and with banners, and that board members and community commissioners attended. Wazni described the event as successful and said it helped expose young athletes and elementary-school students to business and economic concepts.
Board members also discussed a school sponsorship described during the meeting as the "Vita Clover Elementary (Valley Bear) program." The transcript shows the board approved retroactive authorization for that sponsorship. The motion to retroactively approve the sponsorship was moved, seconded and passed.
Wazni and others noted a title sponsor had supported the Golden Gloves event and that the EDC hopes to host similar events locally once a community facility is operational. The board recorded appreciation for staff and partners who organized the event and asked staff to continue community outreach and recognition for EDC contributions.
The board's retroactive approval of the elementary program sponsorship was included in subsequent consent-agenda action and carried on a voice vote.
