EDC staff presented a funding newsletter covering federal and state opportunities through May and asked the board to identify priorities for joint city-EDC grant applications and for a possible trip to Austin to meet agencies.
John, an EDC staff member, told the board the packet contains two lists: one of economic development funding opportunities directly available to the EDC, and a broader list for the city and partners. He said the newsletter is intended to spur local projects, including downtown revitalization and development north toward the expressway.
"The list that I gave you all is all of the opportunities up until May," John said during his presentation, noting many deadlines fall in May and that federal program priorities may be shifting toward job growth rather than equity. He asked board members to brainstorm project ideas and provide dates to schedule a workshop and a possible San Juan day in Austin to meet agency contacts.
Board members agreed to gather dates for an Austin outreach and to plan a workshop-style meeting to review opportunities. Staff noted one board member, Paul, was recovering from surgery but had suggested gathering dates for the trip.
John said he will follow up with details for specific grants the board wants to pursue and provide application materials once the board identifies priorities.
