Des Moines County approves CWA wage deals for deputies, correctional officers, clerical and custodial units

The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 4 approved tentative agreements with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) bargaining units covering deputy sheriffs, correctional officers, and clerical/custodial employees.
County staff summarized the chief terms: the deputy sheriff bargaining unit will receive 5% the first year, then 3% and 3% in the following two years, and the agreement adds an eight-year (96-month) step increase; correctional officers will receive 3% each year for three years; clerical unit members were approved for 5% the first year and 3% in each of the next two years; custodial/maintenance received an 8% first-year increase then 3% for each of the following two years. The board approved the motions by voice vote.
Why it matters: the agreements set pay schedules for multiple county public-safety and operations employees for the coming contract cycle and will affect county payroll budgets.
County staff also described a reorganization of union assignments: the sheriff’s clerical employees requested and were moved into the sheriff’s bargaining unit; the agreements included language ensuring those clerical employees retain their previous clerical terms while becoming part of the sheriff’s unit. Supervisors asked clarifying questions about which units receive the 96-month step language and were told deputies will receive that step increase.
The motions passed by voice vote with supervisors Shane McCampbell, Tom Broger and Jim Carrey recorded as voting yes.
