Parks director updates splash pad, Miller Park renovation and Jack Buck field use

University City’s parks director briefed the council Jan. 27 on several park projects and usage questions, saying planned work on Heeman Park, Miller Park and Centennial Commons will proceed when weather allows and that certain informal uses will remain undesignated pending budget review.

Director (Mister) Girdler told council the Heeman Park splash pad is a roughly $715,000 project slated to start as soon as weather permits and to be completed by May 1. He said the Miller Park baseball field will receive an $875,000 renovation to begin after winter weather breaks and to be completed by June 1; meanwhile staff will prepare a practice field (Field 6) for high-school use.

Girdler said the decision to let the infields at Metcalfe Park grow over time was intentional and reversible if activity increases. He reported that the fenced area behind the new fence at Jack Buck Field has been used by residents informally as a dog walk and for warm-ups; the parks commission recommended against formal designation of that fenced area as a dog park at this time. Council members were told the budget process is the appropriate venue for any future modifications.

Girdler also said Centennial Commons will add a “Century Room No. 3” from the old Cubs Care room and convert an adjacent room into a recreation area with foosball and air hockey.

Council Member Smotherson asked whether mini soccer pitches used by St. Louis Soccer Club would work at Metcalfe Park; Girdler said those pitches require a solid paved surface and are not installed on grass. Council members asked for follow-up about scheduling and the delay timing for Miller Park renovations; staff agreed to provide detail by email.

No formal action was taken; staff will address follow-up questions and potential budget changes through the regular budget process.
