University City council unanimously appoints Lisa Brenner to Ward 1
Summary
After interviews with five applicants, the council voted 6-0 to appoint Dr. Lisa Brenner to fill the Ward 1 seat vacated by Rep. Jeff Hales; Brenner was sworn in at the meeting.
The University City City Council unanimously appointed Dr. Lisa Brenner to the Ward 1 council seat Jan. 27, voting 6-0 to fill the vacancy created when Jeff Hales was elected to the Missouri House.
Council Member Timan moved the nomination and Council Member Clay seconded; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with Council Members McMahon, Fuller, Smotherson, Clay, Teaman and Mayor Crowe recorded as aye. Brenner took the oath of office at the meeting and the City Clerk will follow up on onboarding and any commission vacancies that need filling.
Brenner, who served nine years on the University City School Board and represented the district on the city's TIF commission, told the council she would bring governance experience and community knowledge to the role. During her remarks she noted her orientation to public service and experience working with the school system. In her application and remarks she identified priorities including reliable city services, making University City attractive to young families, and continuing partnerships with institutions and regional agencies.
Council members asked applicants questions during a scheduled interview process; five applicants appeared in person and were given up to 15 minutes each to speak. Other applicants who presented included Chris Blumenhorst, Lee Lawless, John Stam (who withdrew his application during the hearing), and Albert J. Timco Jr.
The council indicated staff will provide Brenner with standard onboarding materials and review open commission vacancies for possible citizen appointments.
Dr. Brenner recited the oath of office in full at the meeting: “I will faithfully and conscientiously discharge the duties of the office I am about to assume with impartiality and justice.”
