Committee backs recommendation to buy movable vehicle barriers, trailers and training for downtown safety

The Parks & Recreation Committee voted to recommend TMP 3212, an agreement with Meridian Rapid Defense Group Sales LLC to purchase movable vehicle barriers, drop‑deck trailers and associated certified training, to the full City Council.
John Bunker, deputy chief, said the city has researched barrier options for several years and is choosing a movable system to provide flexibility as downtown event footprints evolve. “Vehicle barriers are essential in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic,” Bunker said. He described the current downtown deterrents as “mostly visual” with minimal protection and said Meridian barriers would allow the city to deploy protection citywide and reduce manpower needs for setup and removal.
Bunker credited Captain Mike Murray and Assistant Chief Jim Eaton with leading staff review on barrier selection, deployment methodology and storage considerations. The committee moved the agreement forward with a recommendation of approval; the recorded committee vote showed Chair Shields, Vice Chair Lopez and Member Carlisle voting in favor.
If council approves the ordinance, staff said future agenda items will request specific purchase approvals and site work to support storage and deployment of the barrier system.
