Committee backs purchase of Glock models compatible with weapon optics

The Parks & Recreation Committee recommended TMP 3208 to City Council, authorizing an agreement with GT Distributors for Glock Model 45 and 49 pistols that accept weapon-mounted optics.
John Bunker, deputy chief with the Lee’s Summit Police Department, said officers currently carry Glock pistols with fixed iron sights and that the department introduced a weapon‑mounted light system in FY‑25. “They are Glock 45 and 49 models,” Bunker said, explaining the need to acquire pistols that allow the department’s optics to be affixed without manipulation. He said GT Distributors is a direct supplier able to provide milled slides to accept optics and will also buy back the department’s existing firearms to help offset costs.
Bunker told the committee the department manages firearm replacements on a 10‑year schedule and uses the public safety equipment replacement fund for planned purchases; any remaining cost will be bridged with public safety sales tax funds. The committee moved the item to full council with a recommendation of approval; the committee vote recorded Chair Shields, Vice Chair Lopez and Member Carlisle in favor.
If council approves the purchase ordinance, staff will proceed with procurement and the department will retire and sell back replaced firearms as described.
