The Independence City Council approved an application for a restaurant selling intoxicating liquor by the drink for American Way Smokehouse, a proposed barbecue restaurant to occupy a former Payless shoe store in the Bulger Square shopping center near Target.
At a full public hearing, staff described the location and noted residential property within 300 feet that requires city council approval for the license. Jay Sanders, identified as manager of Merchant Square and the upcoming American Way Smokehouse, spoke briefly in favor, saying the restaurant would serve Kansas City–style barbecue and that patrons expected beer with that menu. The council voted to approve the liquor license on roll call (7–0).
What was not decided: No conditions or additional restrictions on the license were announced at the meeting. The council closed the public hearing before the vote and no opposition speakers were recorded.
Ending: The license was approved unanimously and the applicant may move forward with local licensing requirements and operational preparations.
