Commissioners asked Administrator Barry to compile an overview of the county’s federal and state revenue streams and the potential impacts of recent federal actions and the governor’s budget.
Commissioner Sumner opened the discussion, saying she had asked Administrator Barry to prepare an analysis after an executive order affecting federal spending was issued. Sumner asked for an overview “of what kind of federal funds that we receive at the county and if there are any potential impacts” and for an action plan if reductions continue.
Commissioner Anderson (piggybacking on Sumner) asked that state funding be included, noting proposed reductions in the governor’s budget. Administrator Barry said the issue is a “moving target” and that county staff will work with the auditor’s office to evaluate direct federal funding and funds that flow through the state, but warned that federal decisions and rescissions have been variable and can be difficult to track on short notice. Barry said preliminary impacts from the governor’s budget would be included in his administrator’s report and that AMC (Association of Minnesota Counties) is monitoring the federal situation.
Commissioners asked for a roughly one-month delay to let state-level developments settle; Commissioner Sumner noted county reserve months and urged planning. Administrator Barry agreed to work on an analysis with the auditor’s office and to share preliminary findings during an upcoming administrator’s report.
