Clinton County highway department reports tractor transmission repair estimate and limited bids for Bridge 60 rehab

Rick Campbell, representing the Clinton County highway department, told commissioners on Feb. 4 that one county tractor requires a remanufactured transmission estimated at $63,000. Campbell reported the tractor is a 2013 model with 9,288 hours and recommended the county consider options rather than immediately committing to a new transmission. Commissioners asked staff to price out alternatives and return with recommendations.
Campbell also said the county received only one bid for rehabilitation work on Bridge 60; he attributed the limited response to a shortage of contractors that perform rehab work. The board said it would open that sole bid at the next meeting and decide how to proceed.
Separately, Campbell presented a $14,000 quote from a contractor who mounts a mower on an excavator to clear brush on two overpasses that impede sight lines on U.S. 65. Commissioners asked Campbell to email the quote to the board for review and said they would consider the expenditure at the next meeting.
Campbell reported current field activity: crack sealing, pothole patching, graders on gravel roads and stone-hauling where possible. He noted material stock issues at one yard and said some sites cannot receive additional stone immediately.
Ending: Commissioners directed highway staff to further explore repair versus replacement of the tractor transmission, to provide the mower quote in writing, and to proceed with bid evaluation for Bridge 60 at the next meeting.
