Calimesa to pursue energy-efficiency upgrades through regional IREN partnership; short payback cited for several projects

A staff presentation described Calimesa’s participation in the Inland Regional Energy Network (IREN), a regional partnership that includes Western Riverside Council of Governments (WRCOG), Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG), Southern California Edison and SoCalGas.
Staff said the IREN program was used to upgrade water heaters at the senior center and fire station at no cost to the city. For additional energy-efficiency work, the staff report described incentives that would cover about 80% of the cost for some city hall improvements, producing an estimated payback period of about four months from energy savings. For the senior center, staff said incentives could cover roughly 74% of project costs, with an estimated payback period of about nine months.
Staff also said the senior center roof is scheduled for underlay replacement this fiscal year and that staff will explore integrating cooldown/cool‑roof measures when that repair occurs; the agenda packet showed a longer payback period for a full cool‑roof installation if done separately.
"So, that makes our payback period for those improvements only 4 months," a staff member said of the city hall upgrades. The presentation was informational; no council action was required.
