Elliot Ramos, a member of the Revive Board and a former history teacher, used the public forum at a special Rio Grande City Commission meeting to invite commissioners and the public to a Civil War Trail exhibit at Fort Ringgold.
"Fort Ringgold is a giant classroom. It's a jewel that can be used to teach not just children, but adults," Ramos said, urging school field trips and community visits. Ramos said the exhibit was assembled by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and is on loan for three months. "Tomorrow afternoon at 5 at the multipurpose, you are invited," Ramos said, adding the program would include food and guest speakers from UTRGV.
Ramos emphasized the site's educational potential and urged the commission and community to act on preserving and promoting historic downtown resources while the city begins construction of a new loop. "I think that if we wait until that loop is finally completed to act, it's gonna be too late," Ramos said, noting local children often do not know the site's history.
Ramos encouraged broad community attendance at the program; no formal action or city funding was discussed during the public comment.
The exhibit and program were presented as a temporary, three-month loan to the city and the Revive Board's outreach effort.
