Becker County commissioners reinstate board approval for all vacancy hires

Commissioner Barry moved the change after a lengthy discussion about state budget proposals and potential cuts to county funding. "I would just like to make a motion to have all jobs come through the board," Barry said during the discussion. Commissioners and staff debated the tradeoff: board oversight could slow hiring but could also give the board time to assess funding risk tied to state and federal proposals.
County Administrator Carrie and department heads told commissioners they would use committee-level review and electronic communication to limit delays where possible. Commissioners agreed the policy could be adjusted in the future if it caused excessive operational delays.
The motion passed by voice vote. The board directed Human Resources to update the county personnel policy and present implementation steps and a timeline to the board.
