Alabama Senate refers 23 gubernatorial appointments, adopts resolution mourning former senator, and moves to recess

During its legislative session, the Alabama Senate referred more than 20 gubernatorial appointments to the committee on confirmations, adopted a joint resolution mourning the death of former state senator William Jelks Cabiness Jr., approved the journal from the previous legislative day and heard a motion to recess and reconvene Feb. 6.
The referrals came as the secretary read a series of messages from the governor, numbering confirmations 1 through 23. Those messages sent appointees — including Thomas Mathis, Grissom, Daniel Flippo, Napoleon Bracy, Kelly Hope, Bridget Braddock, Amber Turner, Kevin Kidd, Kathy Sawyer, Joseph Morton, Lena Barsinger, Anwar Shahid, Brian Knott, Donnetta Tucker, Carol Yarbrough, Matthew Williams, Bridal McFarlane, Charles Wilkinson, Barrett Vaughn, John Starnes, Payne R. Meadows, Tony Brown and Thomas Ellis — to the Senate committee on confirmations for review, as recorded by the secretary.
Senator Wagner introduced Senate Joint Resolution No. 7 mourning the death of William Jelks Cabiness Jr. and moved adoption of the resolution. The president put the question and, hearing no objection, ordered the resolution adopted after a voice vote. "I move adoption of the resolution," Wagner said on the floor before the voice vote.
Senator Elliott presented Senate Resolution No. 8, honoring Fred Noll Hollis, and the resolution was referred to the committee on rules.
Earlier in the session a senator moved to approve the journal from the previous legislative day; with no objection the journal was approved. Senator Singleton moved that the body receive bills throughout the day; that motion was also adopted without objection.
Senator Gudger made a motion to move into recess, leave the journal open until 4 p.m., and to stand adjourned until 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6. The transcript records the motion and that the president recognized it — the transcript excerpt ends with the motion being heard and does not record a final voice vote or explicit outcome for the recess motion.
The session also included a prayer delivered by Pastor Leon Hampton of First Baptist Church of Greater Washington Park and the pledge led by Cameron Thomas, a student at Alabama State University who was paging for Senator Sundar Singleton.
