The Planning & Zoning Commission on Feb. 4 approved a proposal to expand a mural at 14259 Liberty Street. Anthony and Rebecca Norriga, owners of Texas & Beyond, presented designs showing additional artwork to fill unused wall space on the north side of their building and said multiple local artists would contribute.
The owners described the wall as roughly 38 feet long with an existing 20-foot mural; their plan would add murals on each side that incorporate historical imagery, including a depiction of Charles B. Stewart and a flag image. The applicants said the proposed panels include a roughly 3-foot depiction for some elements, and that one artist recommended by a local sculptor would paint certain sections; they described coordination with the historic society and said the mural debut is planned for Flag Day.
Commissioners asked about artist selection, scale and whether the proposed panels match the existing mural. The applicants said they are using local artists and that one retired professor is preparing drafts; the commission asked that final designs and materials follow historic-district guidance and approved the mural as presented by voice vote.
The commission encouraged the owners to coordinate with staff on final materials and noted the potential for an associated public celebration.
