Traffic signal poles installed at WVU–Walmart intersection; testing could begin next week pending Mon Power and weather

Mayor Lewis told the Monongalia County Commission Feb. 5 that work on two new traffic signal installations is progressing at the WVU–Walmart intersection and at the Sesame Drive intersection.
In remarks to the commission, the mayor reported: “All 8 foundations for the traffic signal poles have been poured. The 4 poles have been set at the, WVU Walmart intersection. The support cables, top and bottom, have been stretched between the poles with the electrical leads being installed as well. The build of the signals was underway.”
The mayor said curbs, sidewalks and ADA pads have been poured at the Walmart corner and that work on the WVU side had completed excavation with curb forms set; concrete curbs were expected to be poured by week’s end weather permitting. He added that signal poles at the Sesame Drive intersection will be set once the poured concrete reaches required PSI strength and that testing and initiation of the lights at Walmart “could take place as soon as next week, depending on the availability of Mon Power to get out there to establish the permanent electric service.”
The mayor said temporary signs will be used to warn drivers until permanent markings and permanent electric service are in place, and he asked that the downhill signal be permanently installed before the others because of visibility entering the intersection.
Why it matters: signal installations at these intersections are intended to improve traffic control and pedestrian access; sequencing depends on utility availability and weather-related curing timelines.
