Harlingen CISD board names Dr. Veronica Corton lone finalist for superintendent

The Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees voted in open session to name Dr. Veronica Corton the lone finalist for superintendent following an executive session.

A trustee moved that the board "proceed as discussed in executive session regarding applicants for the superintendent's position," a motion the board carried by voice vote. Later, a separate motion to name "Doctor Veronica Corton as finalist for the position of superintendent of schools for Harlingen CISD" was moved and seconded; the board announced the motion carried on a voice vote.

Board remarks accompanying the motion described Corton’s experience and record. The board said Corton "has led this district and unified our employees during difficult transitionary times" and highlighted a 25‑year career in public education with service as teacher, principal, director, assistant superintendent of leadership and innovation, deputy superintendent and interim superintendent. Trustees noted Corton was the founding principal of the district’s early college high school (now UTRGV Harlingen Collegiate High) and said she holds a doctorate in educational leadership. The board reported that, during Corton’s recent interim service, the district’s unassigned reserves increased from $17,200,000 to $21,200,000.

The board discussed the 21‑day waiting period required by Texas law for a lone finalist; the board said it will hold a subsequent meeting after that period to consider hiring Corton as superintendent. In response to absent trustees, the board read supportive messages from two members who could not remain for the final agenda item. Trustee Ricky Lehi sent a note citing family obligations and expressing support; Trustee Dr. Muniz sent a message stating he "express[es] my full and unwavering support for Doctor. Corton. Her leadership, dedication, and deep understanding of HCISD's mission makes her the right choice to guide our district forward."

Dr. Corton spoke briefly after the action. "I am humbled and honored to be named the lone finalist for the superintendent of schools for Harland and CISD," she said, and described her commitment to the district and to education’s capacity to change lives. She said she will continue as interim superintendent during the 21‑day waiting period and pledged to work to "strengthen the confidence and trust in our district from the community."

The board cited applicable Texas Government Code sections for the executive‑session matters (including government‑code provisions on consultations with counsel and personnel matters) during the special meeting notice; no final employment contract was signed at the meeting. The board adjourned after Corton’s remarks.
