An event participant said drivers from the Fresno Sports Car Club of America and local law enforcement took part in a community motorsports weekend that raised funds for life jackets to be distributed to children this summer.
The motorsports weekend pitted Fresno SCCA members against law-enforcement drivers from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Fresno Police Department and the California Highway Patrol, an event participant and a law enforcement officer said. Prizes were awarded to the top three finishers: $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third, the participant said; winners could donate their prize money to a charity of their choice.
“The officers got to compete against 20 drivers,” the event participant said. A law enforcement officer said the money raised went to the Sheriff’s Foundation for Public Safety and that “Sheriff’s and OD decided that that money was gonna go to buying life jackets to pass out to children this summer.”
Organizers said the event was free to spectate and encouraged members of the public to attend. The law enforcement officer described the venue as a controlled environment that offers a safer alternative to illegal street racing: “This group that races out here provides a fun, safe environment for them to race as opposed to, you know, 12:00 in the morning on Bridal night on city streets where it can be severely dangerous.”
Speakers at the event emphasized that the occasion combined fundraising with public-safety outreach, and both participants said the race ran smoothly. No formal government action or vote was recorded in the transcript provided.
