Committee backs $212,700 bid to replace Pioneer Park infield turf

Jason Sanchez, community recreation and events staff, described the project as an infield replacement with a planned completion before the season starts; weather could push completion into April. Sanchez said the existing turf will be repurposed for bullpen areas and that advances in materials are expected to give the new infield a 15- to 20-year life expectancy.
Funding for the project was identified as one-time state distribution funds and community facility enhancement fees. Committee members asked how heavily the field is used; Sanchez said nearly every high school-age and adult baseball team uses Pioneer Park and that the field sees daily and nightly play, including tournaments on weekends. Sanchez said he would provide the committee with specific counts of games per year upon request.
Mr. Esquivel moved to accept the bid in an amount not to exceed $212,700; Mr. Moody seconded. The committee approved the recommendation by voice vote and will forward the bid acceptance to the full city council for final action.
