Committee OKs bill requiring attorney general to report on Legislative Audit referrals

The committee approved a bill to place on the attorney general the same reporting duties that local prosecuting attorneys already have when Legislative Audit refers matters for investigation.
Representative Gazzaway explained the measure fills a statutory gap created when the legislature recently authorized the attorney general to pursue investigations referred by prosecuting attorneys after the latter declined to act. The bill requires the attorney general to provide disposition reports to Legislative Audit in the same fashion that prosecuting attorneys currently must do.
Representative Gazzaway said the measure is limited in scope and administrative in nature. The attorney general’s office indicated it is agreeable to the requirement, according to committee remarks. No members raised objections. The committee moved and approved the bill by voice vote.
