Board hears health, life and safety and summer facilities update; portables and playground phases discussed

District facilities staff briefed the Mahomet-Seymour CUSD 3 board Feb. 3 on health, life and safety (HLS) work already approved and additional planned summer projects, including asphalt repair, portables at the junior high, secured entry work, playground phases, fencing and softball diamond upgrades.

Why it matters: Facility work and space decisions affect where students are housed, how safe buildings are during the school day and which temporary or long-term measures the district will pursue to handle enrollment pressure.

Details: Staff said HLS items already approved at recent meetings include new fire panels and bleacher work at some buildings. Summer work will include routine asphalt maintenance (crack sealing, patching) on a rotational basis and placement of a narrower portable at the junior high to fit a constrained location; staff will provide a site diagram next month. The district plans to use existing electrical hookups intended for a second portable and will implement a secured entry at the junior high and gutter and fencing work at Lincoln Trail.

Board conversation also covered playground funding sourced from school and foundation funds and corporate sponsorships applied to softball diamond upgrades. Board members expressed reservations about adding more portables and discussed longer-term options, such as reassigning grades between buildings or converting large spaces (library, wrestling room) into classrooms to reduce portable reliance.

Timing: Staff said concrete pads and portable placement would occur this summer, while replacement of large gymnasium bleachers is expected in summer 2026.
