Martinez Unified dashboard: gains and gaps — chronic absenteeism and English‑learner progress draw board attention
Summary
The district’s 2024 California School Dashboard indicators showed mixed results: some schools improved, but chronic absenteeism and English‑learner progress declined for several student groups; trustees asked for deeper subgroup trend data and DEI committee involvement.

Martinez Unified staff reviewed the district’s 2024 California School Dashboard on Jan. 13, highlighting overall colors and subgroup results across state and local indicators.
Why it matters: the dashboard aggregates test results, attendance, suspensions, EL progress and other local measures; trustees asked for more granular trend analysis for specific student groups to inform district priorities and the DEI committee.
Key points from the presentation (districtwide): English Language Arts and mathematics were both reported at the yellow level; the district’s mathematics distance from standard remained below grade level but showed year‑to‑year improvement (Cannon/Amy presented district slides). The dashboard included a new science indicator with baseline numbers but limited trend data this year.
Chronic absenteeism improved in several schools (district changed color in some cases), but the African American student group remained in a red performance band for chronic absenteeism. Suspension rates declined overall (district moved from orange to green) but certain student groups — notably homeless students and African American students — remained in higher suspension bands. English learner progress showed 50.3% of English learners making progress, a decline versus the prior year; the board noted long‑term English learners are now reported separately for the first time.
Board requests and follow up: trustees asked staff to return with more detailed, school‑level trend data and subgroup breakout (distance from standard and year‑to‑year movement) for ELA and math, and to provide the dashboard metrics to the district DEI committee for targeted work on absenteeism and suspensions. Trustees also asked for a deeper explanation of the college‑and‑career readiness measure components and how counselors and the new California College Guidance Initiative (CCGI) tools are being used to help students meet A–G and other preparedness benchmarks.
Ending: staff said the dashboard data will feed the upcoming LCAP needs assessment and that DELAC/ELAC and the DEI committee will be asked to contribute targeted analysis and recommendations.
