Board approves carryover funding to upfit former Manolis/Manelli rescue building for county EMS use

The Board of Supervisors approved directing previously carried-over rescue-squad operating funds to Amherst County Fire & EMS to upfit the former Manolis/Manelli volunteer rescue building so county career staff can occupy the facility temporarily while a long-term plan is developed.
County staff and the Emergency Services corporate board said the volunteer rescue squad had ceased operations. The county had retained operating funds for the rescue squad when the group paused operations last year; those funds remained in limbo pending decisions. Staff reported the proposed uses are modest: re-lettering donated ambulances (required by the Virginia Office of EMS), minor building modifications to make the space suitable for four to five career staff, and a 36-month arrangement that preserves ownership with the corporate board while allowing county staffing and operations during the interim period.
Chief Beam and county administrators said the approach buys time while feasibility studies and planning for a permanent public-safety facility continue. Supervisor Adams moved to approve the carryover money for the upfitting; the motion passed by voice vote.
