The Rockingham County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution at its Feb. 3 meeting congratulating the McMichael High School Phoenix girls volleyball team for winning the 2024 North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 2A state championship.
The resolution, read during the meeting, notes McMichael defeated Seaforth High School 3–2 on Nov. 2, 2024, at Reynolds Coliseum, finished the season with a 30–2 record, and that the program has recorded 46 consecutive winning seasons. The text also records this as the team’s third state championship appearance and its second championship following a 2022 title.
Commissioner Hall moved to approve the resolution and Commissioner Richardson seconded; the board approved the resolution by voice vote. The resolution specifically named players and staff, including Zoe Bradford, Maddie Cardwell, Avery Chandler, Emily Horn, Kinley Callum, Eva Lockhart, Kelsey Long, Daisy Penzin, Marie Penzin, Jania Rosenbaum, Emily Smith, Caitlin Tanton, Carrington Vaughn, head coach Marty Woods, assistant coaches Sarah Hopper, Larry Raikstra, Danielle Knight, Christine Bradford, athletic director Robert Lambreth, athletic trainer Jason Meadows and others listed in the adopted text.
Coach Marty Woods, present with two players, thanked the board and described the program as “like family,” noting the team’s academic and community leadership. “They are awesome,” Woods said, calling the season a product of consistent practice and community support.
Why it matters: The resolution is a formal county recognition of a high‑school state championship and records the roster and staff for the public record.
The board took photographs with the team and coaches following the resolution’s adoption.
