The Arkansas House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 1005 congratulating the Arkansas Medical Society on 150 years of service and designating 2025 as the Year of the Arkansas Physician.
Representative Micah Johnson, who sponsored the resolution, told the chamber the society had been “a great example of advocacy” and asked the clerk to read the resolution in full. The resolution credited the society with helping create the state's first Board of Health (1879), developing early medical licensing laws (1893 and 1903), establishing the Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanitarium (1909), supporting statewide polio vaccination (1958), and aiding the founding of Arkansas Blue Cross (1948) and the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
The resolution also recognized the society’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic in coordinating distribution of personal protective equipment with the governor’s office and noted a long-running Doctor of the Day program that provides volunteer care to legislators, staff and visitors at the state capitol. Representative Johnson said the society’s history made it “worthwhile to take the time to listen to the resolution,” and asked members to support the measure.
The question before the House was passage of House Resolution 1005. The Speaker announced, “The ayes have it,” and the resolution was adopted.
The chamber moved next to concurrent and other resolutions on the red calendar.
