Pope County treasurer: January sales-tax receipts down about 6.9% but reserves remain

Treasurer Larry Homan reported to the Pope County Court that gross sales and use tax receipts for the general fund in January 2025 totaled roughly $503,000, down about 6.91% (about $37,003) from January 2024. Homan said the year-to-date percent of projected revenue remains above target at 105.91 percent.
Homan told the court that timing effects — including Thanksgiving weekend transactions that settle in the following month — and differences in business-day counts between years help explain the early decline. "So I think a lot of this revenue is not recorded in the proper month," Homan said, cautioning that the county will know more once February collections are posted.
Homan also reported rebates and refunds and other line items that affect the net total and noted that, after recent payments, the county shows roughly $11.3 million available to appropriate for 2025. He walked members through fund-by-fund year-to-date percentages, saying the general fund is about 105.52 percent of projected revenue and other funds (road, library, EMS) are at or above 100 percent of projections.
The treasurer added that some receipts recorded in January were collections for prior months and that a fuller view will be clearer next month. No formal action was taken on the report; it was entered into the record.
