Marshall schools flag $250K–$350K cuts as budget shortfall persists

District finance staff told the Marshall Public School District board that next year’s budget is expected to show a deficit and committees are recommending $250,000 to $350,000 in spending reductions to limit that shortfall.
"The proposal from those teams is look for a 250 to $350,000 reduction in spending for next year," the board heard during a budget-parameters discussion led by district staff member Jeremy. The board was told that the committees have reviewed reserve levels and discussed what constitutes appropriate reductions.
Jeremy said the reductions would still result in deficit spending next year and that administrators will take the committee guidance to building leaders to develop concrete options. "We'll take that back to the admin team, and they'll have some conversations about what that could look like," he said.
Board members were also reminded that a work session will follow the meeting where the budget discussion may continue. No formal budget approval occurred at the meeting; staff said a proposed budget for board consideration will return at a later date.
