Rachel Grover, Kalamazoo County planning and development director, told the Board of Commissioners at its February work session that the county has posted a position to host a LISC AmeriCorps member to serve as a redevelopment-ready coordinator.
Grover said Kalamazoo County was chosen as a host site by the national Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and that the position is an 11-month, full-time placement. The posting includes a $27,200 stipend for the member and an additional $7,300 in educational benefits, training and mentoring, Grover said. The position will work with county housing staff and municipal partners to help communities pursue redevelopment and housing funding from the State of Michigan and other sources.
The posting, Grover said, is not through regular county employment; the county will provide in-kind supports such as training and computer access, and a Kalamazoo Community Foundation grant covers the local $16,000 match required by LISC. Grover said the county hopes to hire soon because there is a LISC conference in New Orleans in April and the host site would like the member to attend.
Vice Chair Taylor asked how the stipend translated into an hourly wage and noted the board’s policy that local jobs should pay at least $15 per hour. Grover confirmed the appointment is for 11 months and agreed to ask LISC whether the stipend could be increased so the hourly pay would meet the board policy. Grover also noted the member receives additional non-wage benefits and training through LISC and the county.
County administration will post application details on the main county webpage and distribute a flyer, Grover said.
No formal action was taken during the work session on the posting; Grover said she would follow up with LISC about the stipend question.
