Kent accepts three Puget Sound Regional Council grants totaling $3.375 million for preservation and planning

David Payne, city transportation planner, reported the city was awarded three grants through the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) call for projects: two preservation awards of $1,500,000 each (for South 2 Twelfth Street preservation and South 190 Sixth Street preservation) and a $375,000 planning award for the Earthworks Park to Downtown connection.
Payne said the preservation projects will mill and overlay roadway segments, repair failing sections, and evaluate crossings and sidewalks for ADA compliance on corridors with significant truck traffic and regional importance. The Earthworks Park to Downtown project (linked to Transportation Master Plan Project P‑85) will fund visioning, outreach, engagement and preliminary engineering for a primary east–west nonmotorized connection through downtown; the $375,000 award is for planning and preliminary design and represents 2027 federal funds.
Council moved to accept each grant, amend the budget, authorize expenditure of funds and authorize the mayor to sign required agreements subject to final terms acceptable to the public works director and city attorney. All motions were seconded and passed unanimously.
Payne noted a fourth PSRC award will be brought forward later once details are complete.
