District staff present draft emergency operations plan to board; building-level steps planned next

Battle Creek Public Schools operations staff presented a draft Emergency Operations Plan and outlined next steps to make building-level annexes and family-reunification procedures.
Herb Hayden, senior director of operations, said the draft integrates best practices of emergency management and reflects collaboration with local emergency response agencies, including a planned review with Lieutenant Chris Young and partners from the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office. Hayden said the manual was developed with input from Dr. Cheeks and the school resource officer and that it is tailored to the district's needs.
"The emergency operation was created and dedicated ... its collaborative approach has resulted in comprehensive resource tailored again to the unique needs of schools," Hayden said. He told trustees the next step is to create building-specific plans because each school needs a distinct family-reunification site.
Board members complimented the document as "very comprehensive" and asked about hazards to include; Hayden noted local risks such as trains behind some schools and said the plan avoids impractical hazards (he said he had removed hurricane from the list as an example). Trustees asked procedural questions; Hayden said staff will work with building leaders on annexes and implementation.
