Board limits Wawa signage at Cottage Hill and Demetropolis: approves two pylons and three wall signs

The Mobile City Board of Adjustment on Feb. 3 approved a reduced sign package for the planned Wawa at Cottage Hill Road and Demetropolis, granting two freestanding pylon signs and three wall-mounted signs while rejecting most of the additional wall-art panels and spanner signage the applicant requested.

Alvin Ramos, representing Wawa’s design team, said the additional ground and wall signs were intended to improve visibility and access at a busy intersection and to match Wawa branding. He described proposed ground signs on Cottage Hill Road and Demetropolis and multiple architectural cutouts and canopy spanners attached to the fuel canopy.

Board discussion centered on quantity and type of signage. One board member expressed concern about allowing an open-ended precedent for gas-station signage and recommended limiting the request. After deliberation a board member moved to approve two pylons and a total of three wall signs; the motion allowed the applicant to decide whether the three wall signs are placed on the building or on canopy spanners but specified removal of the decorative wall art and most of the requested spanner panels.
