The Los Angeles City Council voted to approve a contract to build a new interim housing site in Council District 13 that city officials said will provide housing for more than 50 people currently living on the streets.
"This motion is about approving a contract to build new interim housing site in District 13. A project that will house more than 50 people currently living on our streets," Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez said as he introduced the measure. He thanked his homelessness and community development teams for identifying the site and moving the project quickly through approvals.
Funding and partners: city staff reported state grant funding covers part of the project cost; when city funds were not available to cover the full amount, the nonprofit Dignity Moves agreed to oversee construction and committed to raising a minimum of $2,500,000 to close the funding gap.
Vote: the council approved the contract on a recorded vote of 15 ayes.
Why it matters: the site is intended as interim housing to move people off the street and into a supervised program while longer-term housing solutions are developed. Councilmember Soto‑Martinez framed the project as a model of using state grants, city partnership and nonprofit fundraising to achieve quicker placements.
Next steps: Dignity Moves is to oversee construction and fundraising; the city will execute the contract and proceed with site development and intake planning.
