District outlines Porter's Point renovation timeline, disruption planning and Winooski tour

Amy (Colchester School District administrator) said Principal Millham notified Porter's Point staff last week about the renovation plan and that the team is finalizing details such as ceiling heights, countertops and classroom finishes. The administration has presented two staffing/budget scenarios; the board reviewed "scenario B," which included reducing about 14 currently vacant positions to help balance the budget while funding the bond payment.
Administrators said they will take a team to tour the recently renovated elementary spaces in Winooski to gather lessons learned and design ideas for Porter's Point and Union Memorial School. They also described benefits of the district's current central-office space, including a smaller conference room used for on-site tutoring and a weekly backpack program that distributes food to families, run with donations and Vermont Food Bank support.
District staff acknowledged the renovation will be disruptive and said they are beginning work now to mitigate impacts. Plans discussed include proactive communication to families and staff, use of creative scheduling, preparing professional development and building a rapid-response communication system for issues that arise during construction. The administration said traffic flow, fencing placement and parking impacts are on the planning list and will be part of the detailed construction staging plan.
