Betty Caldwell, a longtime neighborhood resident, asked the Huntersville Board of Commissioners on Feb. 4 to respond to local requests to preserve the historic Torrance‑Lytle High School campus (a 31‑acre site) and specifically to consider preservation or reuse of the cafeteria portion of the former school.
Caldwell told commissioners the site has historic and community significance and said residents in the Pottstown neighborhood want meaningful input to guide any redevelopment. She said earlier county and town efforts had failed to produce a lasting solution and asked that the town re‑examine options and provide a prompt response to residents’ proposals.
Caldwell also raised concerns about Huntersville Rosenwald School number 2 (a historically Black school building), saying former students and residents were disappointed the facility remains unavailable to the public and asking the town to provide information about access and next steps.
In her remarks Caldwell referenced earlier efforts to preserve campus structures, noted the Weimar Center — carved out of the campus and refurbished in 2021 after county and local efforts — as an example of successful reuse, and asked for a follow‑up meeting so residents can see how the town intends to proceed. The board did not take action on the item during the meeting; Caldwell said she would provide a written proposal to staff and asked for a response.
