Martie Doherty, director of Economic and Community Development, told the council the administration has applied for a competitive grant that could fund up to $19 million in redevelopment work at the former Boys & Girls Home site.
"The funds you see here in fiscal year 26 are from a grant that we applied for all 19,000,000 would come from the grant," Martie Doherty said. She added the Boys & Girls Home must vacate the site in 2025 and the city has an interested developer; the grant money, if awarded, would assist with demolition of older hospital portions, street and utility construction and potential site remediation.
Teresa and other staff also reviewed specific infrastructure items in the CIP linked to the broader Gordon Drive Viaduct project and to the Bacon Creek Channel project. The CIP shows a multi-year program of bridge, sewer and roadway work tied to viaduct preparation; earlier in the hearing Teresa cited a Bacon Creek Channel allocation of roughly $9.8 million for channel redevelopment and sanitary sewer rework.
Why this matters: The Boys & Girls Home site is roughly 15 acres in a central area; redevelopment could create multiple housing and economic opportunities. The Gordon Drive Viaduct and Bacon Creek projects are multi-year infrastructure efforts that require coordinated street, bridge and utility work.
Next steps: Staff said they will continue grant applications and return with negotiated terms for any property conveyance and with technical changes on the CIP showing dependencies for the viaduct-related work.
