Board approves remedial-summer plan allowing earlier test re-administration, district says

The board voted to approve the district’s remediation and re-administration plan that changes when and how students who did not pass state end-of-course (EOC) or end-of-grade (EOG) assessments may be remediated and re-tested.
Miss Rice briefed the board on the plan. The district will offer two remediation tracks: a short intervention for students who are close to proficiency (a brief in-person remediation followed by a re-administration), and a longer, enriched summer program for students needing extended instruction. Because the district will finish the enriched program in June, staff said they can readminister state assessments before the statewide window closes and have those scores recorded for school performance measures — a change from prior years when summer timing prevented re-administration from affecting the school’s performance grade.
The district noted that science re-tests for fifth-grade, eighth-grade and biology are not available this year because the state is administering a new science test and scores will not be returned in time for re-administration.
Board member Miss Rosa moved approval; a second was recorded and the motion passed by voice vote with “ayes carried” recorded in the minutes.
District staff said historically remediation increased students’ test scores and that the two-track approach aims to meet both students who need a short second chance and those needing a longer, more intensive program.
