Granville County board gets timeline for school consolidation moves; staff reassignments proceed

Granville County Public Schools officials told the board they are on schedule to implement a multi-stage consolidation that will move students and operations to fewer campuses and that much of the staff reassignment work for next school year is already complete.
Operations Director (presentation) said project-management work is underway and the district has split the consolidation into four main moves: Granville Central, both middle schools, and Butner STEM Elementary. Officials said they are seeking a single vendor to handle all moves but will contract multiple providers if necessary. Work already begun includes ordering packing materials, staging cafeteria tables and determining playground and fencing needs at Butner STEM.
The presentation stressed constraints on storage: empty school buildings cannot serve as general storage because of requirements from the fire marshal, insurance and building use rules. Officials said decisions will be needed on what to keep, what to surplus and which items to dispose of.
On human capital, the district reported that custodial staff were reassigned in December, and clerical, CTE teachers, EC staff, teacher assistants, instructional support staff and child-nutrition staff were reassigned in January. The district said school administrators, core and elective teachers and athletic coaches would be reassigned in the coming weeks. At the time of the update, five staff remained displaced while the district continued placement work and anticipated further changes from retirements and resignations.
Board members asked clarifying questions about storage, displaced staff counts and whether lists of placement status were available; staff said a placement list could be provided to board members but noted that individual personnel lists are handled confidentially.
Officials also reported a partial operational benefit of consolidation: improved bus staffing. Consolidation allowed reallocation of drivers so that each consolidated high school is projected to have a stronger driver roster — for example, Granville Central Middle will have 11 drivers and South Granville High School 14 drivers under next year’s plan — which the district said should reduce route staffing pressures on the county’s southern end.
The board did not vote on consolidation contracts at this meeting; staff said the next steps are contract signings, additional walkthroughs, playground decisions and surplus planning.
