Brentwood Select Board delays decision on front-end loader after repair hopes

The Brentwood Select Board on Feb. 4 discussed but did not act on replacing a failing front-end loader after the town’s highway operator said there may be a slim chance of repair.
Board members noted a Volvo lease quote was included in the meeting packet but agreed it would be premature to pursue a lease warrant while they wait for a final repair determination. “I don’t know that it makes sense to do a lease warrant if we’re still waiting to see if it can be fixed and we’ve already got the other warrant out there,” Select Board member Letty said.
Andrea confirmed the meeting packet includes a purchase price and lease proposals. A purchase price of about 182 (thousand) was discussed and lease options included four- or five-year terms with differing payment schedules. Board members noted the Volvo lease has a somewhat lower interest rate but a higher initial cost than other quotes in the packet.
Members discussed practical fallbacks if the machine cannot be repaired, including short-term rentals or borrowing equipment from neighboring communities. “We could probably find a Band Aid for $20.25 to get by,” Letty said, paraphrasing the highway operator’s estimate for interim fixes.
Given the calendar timing for petitioned warrant articles, the board noted it technically could still post a lease warrant before the official posting deadline but said no member present wanted to pursue that step at this meeting. The item remained informational; board members said they will wait for the highway operator’s final assessment before advancing purchase or lease warrants to a future meeting.
The Select Board did not take a formal vote on purchase or lease authority during the discussion.
