San Mateo schedules special meeting to consider no-confidence resolution for county sheriff

The San Mateo City Council voted Feb. 3 to hold a special meeting Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. to consider a resolution expressing no confidence in San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus.
Several members of the public urged the council earlier in the meeting to act, citing an independent investigation they said raised concerns about retaliation and workplace conduct in the county sheriff’s office. Speakers included Vanessa Lemostapia and Sean Harper, a sergeant with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office who asked the council to "cast a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Christina Corpus" and outlined allegations discussed in an independent report.
Council members discussed the timing of any formal action; proponents said the council should act before ballots are mailed for local elections, while others questioned whether a special meeting was necessary. The city attorney confirmed a special meeting may be held with minimum legal notice and staff said the city would post the related agenda and draft resolution for public review ahead of the session.
At the end of the Feb. 3 meeting the council directed staff to publish an agenda and packet for the special meeting. The city clerk will post the draft resolution and supporting materials on the city website prior to the Feb. 6 meeting.
No final resolution was adopted at the Feb. 3 meeting; the Feb. 6 special meeting will be the first opportunity for a council vote on the proposed no-confidence resolution.
