Local nonprofit plans teal ribbons and outreach on Georgia Avenue for sexual assault awareness month

Jordan said the Combee Center, a nonprofit serving victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in six South Carolina counties (Aiken, Allendale, Barnwell, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda), places teal bows with informational cards along streets in its service area. She said Georgia Avenue in North Augusta will be one of the locations for the teal bows and that the attached cards explain how to contact the center and where to find services.
Jordan said the center tracks contacts and service requests through its regular reporting systems and that people sometimes respond to outreach months or years after an incident; she described the ribbons and cards as a way to 'plant seeds' and raise awareness. She also said the center hosts free public trainings and a conference during awareness months; one event on responding to disclosures of sexual abuse was scheduled as a virtual, free session during the week of the council meeting.
Council members thanked Jordan and confirmed the city had already coordinated placement with a staff contact. Jordan said the center also performs local trainings for law enforcement and welcomes invitations from churches and businesses for outreach.
Jordan's appearance was during the council's public power hour; she did not request any council action.
